Updates One Day at a Time: Saturday December 8th

We (Dan, my dad and I) began the day with breakfast at the hotel. My dad skipped out on what the team was doing so that we could have a little bit of time together. We decided to go shopping at the wood market. I assumed that the team would be going together at some point, but it was MUCH better that just the three of us went. Otherwise, dad would have gotten ripped off by the vendors being with a group of white people. Dan and I were able to use the little bit of Chechewa that we know to convince the vendors that we weren't just tourists and that we deserved the "malawi" price! It worked out pretty well. We had fun bartering, and Dad was a big hit with all the locals. He made friends easily, making people laugh at his antics.

After shopping (which took about 2 1/2 hours....it's a LONG process), we had lunch and then Dad and Dan rejoined the group while I napped in the air conditioned hotel room. The group was going to a pastor graduation outside of Lilongwe. African Leadership Malawi does a lot of training for Pastors throughout Malawi, and so it was great for the group to see the impact of that program. Dan and Dad were gone for some time, not getting back to the hotel until around 6pm. I napped the WHOLE time!

So that's about it for Saturday. Here I am at the market, checking out the wood carvings.
