Updates, one day at a time: Friday December 7th

The Internet has been bad this week, so sorry for the delay in the updates. Now I am way behind, so bare with me, as this has been a busy week. There will be more pictures and posts to come.

I took the day off from school so that I could join the team in visiting a local church and its outreach ministries that have been connected/supported by African Leadership. We began by visiting CCBC (Capital City Baptist Church) which is in Lilongwe. Dan and I know plenty of people who attend this church, many of them being our students. It is very similar to churches you would find in the U.S. and many of the missionaries and expats are drawn to it. I have heard a lot about the outreach mercy ministries that this church has created and been involved in, and I was excited to learn more about some of those ministries. They have a school which is located on the campus of the church. The entire student body is made up of Malawians, most of them being very poor. It was great to see that the church was concerned with providing poor children with good education.

The group headed into town, where we visited a community being supported by CCBC. It is a great little community of families who have taken in orphans. Those who have done so are able to live in houses (built by teams from the U.S. and locals) for free. As well, there is a chicken farm there, where the care takers can raise chickens to market size, and then sell them. It seemed to be a great model for sustainable communities outside of the city. I'm sorry I do not have more information about it. I actually spent most of the time with the children, playing games and singing songs. For some reason, the children always win my attention in the end!

This is my friend Mary. She spoke great English, so she helped me to communicate with the other children. I always try to find a translator. She was really helpful in getting the kids to sing songs for me, too and was singing all the way up until the time we had to leave.

Two little girls, fighting to get in the picture.

Just a cute little boy living in the community. It was hard to tell who was orphaned and who was not. I guess none of them are orphans anymore, because they have been brought into a new family. It is so encouraging to see the local people of Malawi caring for each other. God is really working in this place.

Here are some of the kids I got to play with. I only know a few games that they like to play, but they love teaching me more. They always win though!!! I think they like that.

Here is a photo of the chickens at the chicken farm. It seems as though this little business has been pretty successful for the community thus far.
